Specialists in Normal Pregnancy Care
Independent midwives are specialists in normal pregnancy care. They are practitioners in their own right, responsible for the primary health care of mainly healthy women and babies. They can provide total care from early pregnancy through the labour and birth until the baby is a month old.
Structure
The Society is made up of midwives and midwifery advocates committed to supporting women’s birth choices, sensitive midwifery practise, continuity of care and carer and the protection and promotion of breastfeeding.
Publications
The Society produces a quarterly newsletter Communique and a Members Directory annually connecting members with colleagues, consumers and commerce
Mission
The Mission of the Society is to advance independent midwifery through
- creating greater public awareness of natural birth opportunities for women
- promoting best midwifery practise through continuity of care
- increasing pathways for all midwifery practitioners to realise credentialing with the Australian College of Midwives
- providing initiatives for midwifery students to participate in independent midwifery practice
- advising government and health authorities on the benefits of independent midwifery practise to women and society at large
- collaborating with like-minded groups at national and international level
Beliefs
Society members believe that providing continuity of care is one of the strongest determinants of positive outcomes in maternal and child health and is the most effective way to reduce the gap between health resources and health needs
Continuity of care can contribute to the growth of love, trust, respect and cooperation within persons and their families – birth families, extended families and the family of humankind
Using models of continuity of care that draw upon learnings from many cultures promotes healing of some of the casualties of discontinuity of care while fostering professional growth amongst midwives
